The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, originally
known as the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public Institution of
Medicine, was founded in 1910 by Dr. D. Paul (an American medical
missionary ) etc.40 western doctors.
The
Hospital is composed of main campus, Huangpu branch and Dongshan
branch. Main campus and Dongshan branch are located in Yuexiu
District of Guangzhou, and Huangpu branch in the center of Huangpu
District in the eastern suburb. The Huangpu branch mainly focuses on
orthopedics and traumatic first aid. The Dongshan branch mainly
focuses on obstetrics & gynecology and pediatrics. The First
Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is an important base
for research, medical service, medical education, preventive care
and rehabilitation in south China. It is well known for its high
quality and excellent service in China and Southeast Asia. It has
been recognized as the most trusted hospital in mainland China by
Hong Kong people.

Staff
There are 4576 staff, including 164 professors, 428 associate
professors, 1001 attending doctors, 1750 nurses and 1233 other
health professionals in the hospital.

The hospital has established 61 clinical departments and 15
non-clinical departments with a good reputation for their clinical
service, particularly in the fields of Nephrology, Neurology,
Gastrointestine-pancreatic Surgery, Vascular-thyroid-breast Surgery,
Hepatobiliary Surgery, Organ Transplantation, Minimal Incision
Surgery, SICU, Neurosurgery, Burn Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology,
Otorhinolaryngology, Endocrinology, Thoracic Surgery, Orthopaetics,
Cardiac Surgery, Microsurgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology,
Reproduction, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Hematology,
TCM, Rehabilitation, Acupuncture, Ultrasonics, Radiology, Nuclear
Medicine, and etc. Among which, Nephrology, General Surgery,
Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology have been
recognized by Ministry of Education as the state key disciplines.
Department of Rehabilitation has been selected as Rehabilitation
Center of WHO, and is noted for its accomplishments. Laboratory of
Nephrology and Laboratory on Assisted Circulation are the Key
Laboratories of Ministry of Health.
Research Activities
In recent 10 years, the hospital has won 90 awards for its R&D
achievements, including 3 of “The Second Prize for National Science
& Technology Progress” ( Prof. Xiuling Liang in 2000, Prof. Guihua
Chen in 2004, Prof. Xueqing Yu in 2006), 16 of “The Prize of Chinese
Medical Science & Technology”, 5 of “The First Prize for Science &
Technology Progress in Guangdong”, and etc. It has undertaken 885
various research projects supported by MOST ( Ministry of Science &
Technology) “973 project” , “863 project”, the National Natural
Science Fund and etc. Currently 49 experts in our hospital are
appointed as the chair positions of different medical societies in
China and Guangdong. In addition, the hospital manages 7 national
key medical journals, including Chinese Journal of Nephrology,
Chinese Journal of Microsurgery, Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal
Surgery, Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychological Diseases,
Chinese Archives of General Surgery, Journal of Image &
Interventional Radiology and Modern Clinical Nursing.

Medical Services

The hospital has Private Medical Centre, which draws patients from
around the world and offers special medical service for them. The
hospital is also equipped with PET-CT, 3T-MRI, 64 Slides Spiral CT,
ECT, TCD, EMG, Doppler, bidirectional cardioangiograghic equipment,
heart monitoring system, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripter,
electronic endoscope and etc. Based on its outstanding technology,
the hospital successfully diagnosed and cured many critical,
difficult or rare diseases, such as the first cases of dieresis in
the country for conjoined twins and the craniopagus, the operation
to rectify the 3-leg baby and the first operation in Asia to
transplant the kidney and liver simultaneously, and etc. These
prominent achievements fill the gaps of medical sciences in the
country.

Medical Education
This hospital is the biggest teaching hospital for medical students
and undertakes approximately 60% of the clinical teaching for Sun
Yat-sen University. There are 68 tutors for PhD students and 239
for master’s degree students. Every year, over 103 PhD students,
270 postgraduates, 670 undergraduates are recruited in the
hospital. Dr. Niansheng Yang and Dr. Qunying Guo of the Department
of Nephrology have been conferred with the Award of National
Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China ( sponsored by the Ministry
of Education). The hospital is also an important base for national
on-going medical education. The hospital undertakes more than 25
on-going medical education programs each year. It offers clinical
training programs for doctors and other health professionals all
over the world and more than 1000 medical workers received their
medical training in the hospital each year.
Exchange & Cooperation
At present, the hospital has established academic
collaboration with hospitals of more than 20 countries,
including Europe, U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Japan, and
etc. It hosts more than 12 international academic
conferences each year.
