The
First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was established
in 1910, firstly named the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public
Institution of Medicine. It was named the First Affiliated Hospital
of Sun Yat-sen Medical College in 1957, and named the First
Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in
1985. Since the former Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences
merged with the former Sun Yat-sen University and became the new Sun
Yat-sen University on Oct. 26, 2001, it was renamed the First
Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University.
The
Hospital is the largest one with the most comprehensive capacity among all
affiliated hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University and is also one of the biggest and most powerful hospitals in
the country. Being a 3A hospital (top level in the Chinese hospital ranking
system) and philoinfant hospital, the hospital is composed of main campus,
Huangpu division and Dongshan division. Main campus and Dongshan division are
located in Yuexiu District of Guangzhou, and Huangpu Division in the center of
Huangpu District in the eastern suburb. The Huangpu Division mainly focuses on
orthopedics and traumatic first aid.
The Dongshan division mainly focuses on
obstetrics &gynecology and pediatrics. The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun
Yat-sen University is an important base for the medical treatment, teaching,
research, sanipractice and rehabilitation in south China. It is well known for
its treatment standard and excellent service in China and Southeast Asia. It was
considered to be the most trusted hospital in mainland China by Hong Kong
people.
Clinical practice and Achievements
There
are 4576 staff, including 2983 health professionals, 164 professors,
428 associate professors, 1001 attending doctors in the hospital.
The hospital has 2228 opening beds, provides service to 4,240,000
out-patients, 44,700 surgical operations and 66,700 discharges in
past year, and these numbers are growing year after year. Based on
its outstanding technology, the hospital successfully diagnosed and
cured many critical, difficult or rare diseases. These prominent
achievements fill the gaps of medical sciences in the country.
Medical Education
This
hospital is the biggest teaching hospitals for medical students and
undertakes approximately 60% of the clinical teaching for Sun
Yat-sen University. It has dozens of departments qualified for Ph.D.
and Master programs. At present, more than 700 students are enrolled
into the postgraduate program. The hospital is also a major base for
national continue medical education. It has 14 training bases of the
Ministry of Health, 2 research institutes, 6 clinical treatment
research centers, and 14 clinical research laboratories. The
Laboratory of Nephrology and the
Laboratory of Assisted Circulation are the key laboratories of the
Ministry of Health. The hospital undertakes more than 25 continue
medical education programs each year. It offers clinical training
programs for doctors and public health professionals from the nation
and abroad. More than 1000 medical
workers received their medical training in this hospital every year.
Competent and Comprehensive
Departments Settings
The clinical departments are divided into 17 grade II disciplines
and 50
grade
III disciplines. There are 16 departments of medical technology.
The Departments of Nephrology General
Surgery, Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology are the
national key departments (assessed by national evaluation system).
The Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics and Urology,
are the provincial key departments. Many social medical treatment
organizations such as Rehabilitation
Center of WHO were also located in the hospital. Hyperbaric Oxygen
Chamber boasts the longest history and biggest scale in South China,
and Centers for Hemopurification, Peritoneal Dialysis, and Extracorporeal Counterpulsation are also among the
biggest ones in the country. Specialized ICUs provide reliable
guarantee for critical patient care.
Achievement in Research
In recent 10 years, the hospital has won 90 scientific awards
conferred by the nation and by the Mininstry
of Health, the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province. It has
undertaken 885 different research projects for the country. The
number of projects granted by National Natural Science Foundation in
the hospital is on the top among all hospitals in the country. The
numbers of scientific publications,citations
and publication cited by SCI rank also on the top among all
hospitals in the country. The hospital has held numerous nation-wide
academic meetings and more than 10 international academic
conferences each year. Currently 49 experts in our hospital are
appointed as the chair positions of different medical societies in
China and Guangdong.
The hospital manages 7 national key medical
journals, including Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Chinese Journal
of Microsurgery, Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery,
Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychological Diseases, Chinese
Archives of General Surgery, Journal of Image & Interventional
Radiology and Modern Clinical Nursing.
This hospital has established academic collaboration with hospitals
of more than 20
countries, including U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Japan, Holland and
Sweden. By
working in close collaboration with our friends and making full use
of the opening policy and geographic advantages, we would do our
